With an elegant Triple Lens Camera design on the rear and sleek lines everywhere else, Galaxy S23 strikes the perfect balance between looks and smarts.
The Galaxy S20 Plus and Ultra both have a time of flight sensor that is missing from this phone. That’s a debate to be held for another time, and I’m pretty impressed with all of the new stuff Samsung has brought to the table this year. These new phones feel like much more of an upgrade than ever before and since the Galaxy S20 is the cheapest of the bunch, it earns my recommendation more so than the rest. This means the slightly curved 6.2-inch OLED panel will refresh 120 times a second, rather than the 60 times a second you’ll find on pretty much every other 2019 handset. The result? Everything just feels far smoother, which gives the impression the phone is faster. This feature isn’t necessarily new – the OnePlus 7T Pro had a 90Hz display in 2019 – but it’s welcome, and it elevates the panel to the next level.
This review is based on our time with the Exynos 990 version of the phone. We’ve yet to fully test the Snapdragon 865 version of the S20, but we have tested the Galaxy S20 Plus running that chip and we had no complaints. The large 4400mAh battery means you can keep going for longer. Chat to friends, stream content, and game for even longer thanks to optimised battery life. As for the display’s general properties, expect much the same as from the S10 Plus, with a very clear and detailed picture when watching content up to 1440p resolution. Despite technically having a higher-resolution screen than the one on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, both that phone and the S20 Plus showed roughly the same picture when demoing, say, a 1440p video on YouTube– though the Apple phone’s screen does have a slight edge in contrast, showing high-contrast subjects (like a lizard in the sun) in greater clarity. The zoom skills aren’t quite as good as the Ultra, but this 3x shot retains all the detail of the ball That makes the choice of which to buy more confusing than usual - we'd be inclined to say that it's no longer worth paying full price for the Samsung Galaxy S20, but at even slightly less than the Galaxy S21 costs it could be worth considering.
There are a few different power-saving modes that you can enable, each of which turns off certain features, and if you buy the Galaxy S20 FE we’d recommend that you experiment with these if you want to max-out your battery life. The Galaxy S20 Plus connects to both mmWave and sub-6 5G networks, making it one of the first mainstream phones to do so at the time. That number has grown since but it remains an attractive option -- in theory, anyway.Like last year’s S10 handsets, the S20 range features Samsung’s reverse wireless charging feature, which enables you to use your S20 to charge other gadgets that support Qi charging. Thankfully, the phone retains its microSD slot and IP68 rating. Performance and specs – The Galaxy S20 is fast and offers the smoothest Android experience around The main camera has a large sensor, so it ‘sees’ light, and therefore color, better – snaps looked bright and punchy, with everything from blue skies to green plants looking bold. Samsung’s effective AI scene optimization likely has a hand here too, as that tweaks your images depending on what you’re pointing the camera at. The phone’s speakers are pretty good – they’re not top-end, either in terms of audio quality or maximum volume, but they’re fit for purpose whether you’re gaming, watching a movie or just listening to music from the phone.
