About this deal

Martin's Press published a book entitled Love Letters of Great Women edited by Ursula Doyle, which it says was also inspired by the Sex and the City movie. Poet warriors, from the first through the twentieth century, including: Ovid, Sir Walter Raleigh, Goethe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Leo Tolstoy, Victor Hugo, Shelley, Robert Browning, Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Pierre Curie, George Bernard Shaw, Jack London, Admiral Peary, Woodrow Wilson, and many more. This is a collection of love letters but the history about the love affairs informing the letters, are even more interesting than the letters themselves. Keats is the only romantic poet whose reputation has steadily grown through all changes in critical fashion.

Yesterday and this morning I have been haunted with a sweet vision-- "I have seen you the whole time in your shepherdess dress.I'd recommend this book to all who like a bit of romance, want to learn a bit of 'behind-the-scenes' about history, and those who loved the scene from the Sex And The City movie of Carrie reading a piece of the poems contained in this book to Big. Perhaps it would have become so overpoweringly sweet as to overwhelm the simplistic and pure beauty of it?

In the 1790s Goethe contributed to Friedrich von Schiller´s journal Die Horen, published Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and continued his writings on the ideals of arts and literature in his own journal, Propyläen.Men like Henry VIII, George Washington, and Napoléon, who wrote, "I awake consumed with thoughts of you. No matter how strongly we desire to be loved, we will not fulfill it unless we believe there can be someone who loves us so endlessly and unconditionally.

For some of these great men, love is a ‘delicious poison’ (William Congreve); for others, love can scorch like the heat of the sun (Henry VIII), or penetrate the depths of one’s heart like a cooling rain (Flaubert). The men writing the letters, also not too shabby: from Nathaniel Hawthorne to John Keats and Ludwig Van Beethoven. On the occasions when they have been obliged to be apart, Andy’s conversation is so likely to center on Katharine that she becomes all the more present for being absent. Not all the great men in this collection wrote great love letters, although undoubtedly, some of the passion must have been lost in translation and/or lack of context.

I get that these men were just "products of their time," but just as Doyle is unwilling to overlook/ignore Chesterton's Antisemitism, as am I unwilling to overlook these men's disgusting habits of objectifying and manipulating the women they supposedly love. It did a great deal toward giving Browning a reputation for being unintelligible and for limiting the circles of his readers.

Mais do que um livro sobre amor, acho que é um livro sobre a Humanidade das emoções, onde nem o mais poderoso imperador consegue escapar. His first novel The Beautiful and Damned was flawed but set up Fitzgerald's major themes of the fleeting nature of youthfulness and innocence, unattainable love, and middle-class aspiration for wealth and respectability, derived from his own courtship of Zelda. M Godding Books Ltd is an internet book business running from Wiltshire and sending books all over the world every working day. A collection of powerful and sentimental letters that lets you enter different times and spaces, from luxury upper-classes in London to horrifying landfills dominated by battles. These letters transcend time and technology, reminding us that the essence of love remains unchanged. I never knew before, what such a love as you have made me feel, was; I did not believe in it; my Fancy was afraid of it, lest it should burn me up. My favorite letter was from John Keats, who (I learned from reading the book) died from consumption at the tender age of 26. Wilde tried to fight back with a libel suit as Douglas was sullying his name in public, but it was to no avail.
