About this deal

Unfortunately, my wife wasn't at home at the time, so I was expecting to have to bounce back and forth between boys to show them how to use the devices. When downloading games and apps with your child, make an attempt to make a choice that mirrors what your child is learning in class. The LeapPad chewed through 4 AA batteries at an astonishing rate, but there have apparently been improvements in the LeapPad2 in terms of battery consumption. Even watching a You Tube video of popular Treehouse shows, you find posts that start off harmless but people with too much time on their hands have gone and inserted non-appropriate material partway through.

Rules as simple as this, can keep your child from the monotony involved in extended play of one game, and introduce a "freshness" with each new use of the LeapPad. I'm happy to report that now, a year later, that LeapPad is still going strong and in the hands of my 2-year-old. The LeapPad2 (like the LeapsterGS) is a toy produced by Leapfrog marketed as an educational handheld gaming console for kids aged 3-9.

Sound is both surprisingly full and surprisingly beefy, showing what difference a little extra size can make. But ultimately it all comes down to my watching and observing them with the hardware and determining if it's a good thing or a bad thing. Last year I wrote about my (then) 4-year-old son's experiences with LeapFrog's take on the tablet – the LeapPad. Aside from games and apps, LeapPad 2 also has a wide range of downloadable e-books, allowing the tablet to be used as a beginner's e-reader.

The main unit itself is also the same size in terms of height and width, although they did change the color scheme; the original version has mainly white with green corners and the new version is mainly green with white corners. That's definitely been fixed in the new version, and I was quite impressed with how fast apps would open and close. Because apps range in content, from educational to "gamey," and even as a medium for reading books, children with ADHD will engage their flexibility skills by shifting between different types of games. Though prior generation LeapPads are decent with game play time using standard “AA” batteries or rechargeables, even though the device has auto-shut off to preserve the power, if your kids like taking pictures and videos, it’s totally worth the extra money to not have to worry about replacing the batteries and just plugging it in the wall to charge. Just because the LeapPad Ultra is recommended for 4-9 year olds, certainly you need to understand your own child’s skill levels and interests.
