About this deal

Dear reader do yourself a favour and just read the collected works of the master of Folk Horror, Arthur Machen. Wonderful read for horror enthusiasts who enjoy reading tales from the beginning of the genre, and like old English. The only two stories I really liked were "The Summer People" (which I had already read) and "The Lady on the Grey. There is a quirkiness and humour to some which suits folk horror tales really well, yet – even so – the image for Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Thrawn Janet’ is rather disturbing (and also my favourite illustration in the book).

She looked on the country as something excellent and wholesome in its way, which was apt to become troublesome if you encouraged it overmuch. Sometimes (more often in the older stories) these lead to a denouement in which the protagonist either witnesses or is drawn into a specific bizarre happening, but in others the point seems to be more to leave the reader with a general sense of foreboding or unease without any specific event at the conclusion. Van az a pár ezer éves gondolat, hogy az ember annál boldogabb életet él, minél közelebb élhet a természethez. This anthology of Folk Horror Tales curated and illustrated by Richard Wells, has the most hauntingly beautiful imagery to accompany diverse and Damnable Tales about the horrors of the ages. e. white supremacist) identity has replaced a genuine cultural identity and knowledge of this among a lot of white British, particularly English, people.

Relatos ambientados en aldeas remotas, castillos abandonados e islas perdidas donde habitan extraños personajes, cultos paganos y dioses malévolos. The stories included in this anthology are not very famous, even when the authors are well known in the horror and mystery genres.

The title and reviews made me think that "folk horror" was the rural equivalent of "urban legends," scary stories told by people in rural areas as if they were true. The subject matter of this tome unexpectedly caused my ears to prick up with curiosity – considering my own involvement with this whole folk horror thing – and as I am a little bit of a collector of weird short stories, I was very intrigued to see which tales he would select.

These twenty-two stories take the reader beyond the safety and familiarity of the town into the isolated and untamed wilderness. Indeed there were a lot of good examples of that in this collection, but there were other themes too. Az, hogy a folk horror – ha jól értelmezem – pont ennek a felfogásnak ad egy piszkos nagy pofont, de úgy, hogy a fal adja a másikat. R. James, Shirley Jackson and Algernon Blackwood, alongside eerie tales by those less associated with the horror genre, like John Buchan, E.

This is a book that demands to be read aloud--perhaps on a darkening winter evening before a roaring fire. While her contemporaries were cranking out Victoriana Nesbit delivers her tale in a strikingly modern style that reminded me of Bernard Taylor's best.

Also interesting seeing past centuries' perception of Halloween, and some folklore/practices I was not aware of such as sin eating. However, even after vowing to only read good books from now on, I soldiered on as I thought maybe the remaining stories would pull it all back. I had never seen a Folk Horror anthology before, and especially one that was so beautifully illustrated. The Withered Arm was also a very interesting story, with almost a time travel/sensing the future paradox of the two main characters harming each other unintentionally, in ways that depend on the actions of the other. But even if some are repetetive, it's usually easy to see why they were included, and this is a perfect gift for anyone who enjoys horror or dark fantasy. Others seemed to recognise the inherent uneasyness of some landscapes and that feeling, creeping up on you through the autumn mist, and that's what I'm really chasing when I turn to folk horror.
