The problem is that a box next to a joist will not be stable enough to support a fan if it is only supported on one side. The only risks I see now are 1) the fan bracket failing, which seems unlikely since it is designed to be a fan bracket, or 2) The threads in the nut or pipe somehow strip, which also seems unlikely given they are steel. I’m still not sure what exactly they are securing, that is why I said if on show use the chrome caps, if it is just to hold a bracket onto the ceiling then the Golds may be fine, just not sure of use.

However if you can do it as the box is intended to mount, then the box is literally built to work that way. Do not do it wack-a-dack merely because doing it correctly is too hard -- that's what people are warning you off from. You are correct that most of the supplied screws with kit are made of cheese, I don’t even open the packet they come in, I just through them straight in the bin and use my own Gold screws supplied by Screwfix.The problem is not the simple strength of the ceiling joists - we'll presume that even a single joist is strong enough to hold up a fan.
