About this deal

Seventy per cent of BBC Three requests that week were for Normal People and a quarter had finished all 12 episodes. It was really hard for me to focus, I felt just very anxious and I just really couldn't spend more than a couple minutes reading.

The main characters, Marianne and Connell, know each other from school but also because Connell's mother is a cleaner for Marianne's mother. After a decade of working in social advocacy, Natalie realized back in 2020 that she was dealing with serious burnout. Her brother is living as a claustic queer man because he thinks his mother might not approve so no one can know. Connell feels that he is trapped in a cycle where the money he spends on Marianne comes from his mother who gets it from Marianne's family whereas Marianne seems unbothered by spending money.

Because what fantasy and also science fiction can do so well is explore those questions of identity and belonging and otherness in a way that can slip in past our defenses, you know, because there's so much that's so different. So first of all, the author describes herself as a native Brooklynite of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent, and she's drawing on that identity to inform her protagonist.Normal People ('the literary phenomenon of the decade', Guardian ) was the Waterstones Book of the Year 2019, won the Costa Novel of the Year 2018 and the Royal Society of Literature's Encore Award 2019. But also about maybe some preconceived notions we have about how our world works and how relationships work and all those expectations. She's 39, and at this point in time, she finds herself working as a wedding planner to the uber-rich. What's interesting as the book progresses is the way their roles reverse, especially when they go to Trinity College in Dublin.

The New Yorker Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2018 and Winner of Specsavers National Book Awards International Author of the Year When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. And I think really building an exciting queue of titles for next year is going to keep that ritual up for me. You know, I read Baby-Sitters Club, but then I would also raid their shelves and read, you know, Pride and Prejudice and the House of Spirits. Like he especially has strong people-pleasing qualities, and Olga has like this deep abandonment issue from her mother like literally walking out on the family when they were very young. After Rob commits suicide on New Year's Eve, Connell's mental health suffers, and he goes home to Sligo for the funeral. NATALIE: Yes, that's part of the appeal, honestly, is if I enjoy this title, there's already built-in a few more from this author, so that's very cool.
