Fall of Ruin and Wrath was laced with a fascinating world, characters that will steal you heart, mysteries that are intertwined with secrets, and moments that will leave you on the edge of your seat! But will it just be another stabby, freckled snowflake *ahem* I mean, Queen, who … who talks … like this … all. Although the book is quite long and has an extra slow burn, which is the only reason I lowered my rating, it is definitely worth your time. Our indulgence in all manner of things, from gorging on food to indulging in the delights of each other during the Feasts, also fed the Hyhborn. Simply put Lis is a bland, watered down version of Poppy (surprise), the plot is recycled and stale (there’s only so many times you can do the same thing, okay), and finally the romance is sub-zero.

However, her luck changes when she becomes the secret courtesan of Baron Archwood in exchange for protection.Long enough for me not to be shocked by the knowledge that I had my own space, my own rooms with electricity and hot water, something that many places in the kingdom didn’t have. also, everyone with brown eyes is low-born and normal and everyone with pale blue eyes is high-born and powerful… ma’am!

When I first came to Archwood Manor, at sixteen, Naomi had already been here for about thirteen months. When the Baron takes an interest in the traveling prince and the prince takes an interest in Calista, she becomes the prince’s temporary companion. And even though the premise is a clear set up for including spice, I also really enjoyed the rest of the story, too. I’m not a super prudish reader, but when the stories stop telling a story, I start to get annoyed and underwhelmed.I liked the idea of the Hyhborn, (the immortals made from the earth who are very powerful) and the Lowborn (the mortals who are born) and the differences between them. I … I wanted to talk to you about my sister,” she began—tentatively, and Naomi was never tentative in anything she did. Because of this, mortal lives are inconsequential to immortals, particularly if they feel it’s for the greater good. Calista finds herself torn between her intuition, which may save her from danger, and her heart, which pulls her towards a potentially doomed fate. There’s words on the page, there’s characters, there’s (kind of) external things happening, but there is no story.

These include food insecurity, homelessness, and the fact that the rulers are out of touch with those they are supposed to protect. A second passed, and another; then a series of tingles erupted between my shoulder blades and spread up, over the back of my skull.There was a few info dumps decently spaced throughout the book… however… I walked away mostly confused on how the information provided connected to what was being discussed or just plain confused.
