Exhausted and Exerted workers can recuperate using an empty bed to regain one level of stamina (so, exhausted moves to ready, and exerted moves to exhausted). The play is pretty non-competitive and gentle and I have yet to see anything dying or being killed (your villagers are just tired even if they fail their tasks) so this is perfect for playing with children. This isn’t necessarily bad–the game presents interesting decisions throughout and encourages risky plays–but it’s a hair disappointing.Placing goods on a player board will increase a player’s income each turn, as well as provide end game victory points (coins). The “explore 7” condition is the number of lanterns needed to (in this case) successfully open the chest, when the player would gain rewards. But just like real life, some villagers are the “Jack-of-all-trades” type, and a few others scream out to visit the vast network of underground caves.

Simply choose the villagers that you want to explore the cavernous regions below your settlement and another player will read a scenario from the included encounter book. If you put mushrooms in the first slot, for example, all subsequent mushrooms must be put in that slot. Next, the Harvest action lets you gather some of the resources you’ve accumulated and move them to your player board for increases to your income you gain each round and victory points later. It looks like quite a lot to get your head around at the start but once you have done a round you easily pick up the game and it is great fun. At the end of the round, the players and game play area go through maintenance (refreshing worker and building pools, refreshing workers based on available beds, using any ciders and potions, gaining income from the advancement track, etc).I think that this is a necessary path to have available, and extra rounds would completely do away with that strategy. The player is also allowed to keep the cave card, which provides space upon which an underground outpost may be constructed.
