About this deal

The plot twist featuring the brother had shock value, but was undone with the fatuous inclusion of the INSECT anagram in the following scene.

MorphoAdamson is invited to stay as a guest at the Alabasters' country house, and organize Sir Harald's insect collection. Angels and Insects consists of two decent-sized novellas, Morpho Eugenia (that would be the insects) and The Conjugial Angel (more obviously: the angels). Byatt perfectly blends laughter and sympathy [with] extraordinary sensuality" ("San Francisco Examiner). Based on real people and events, this debut novel follows Lale Sokolov, a young Slovakian Jew sent to Auschwitz in 1942.

The second novella, whose name I have forgotten, is worth reading, especially if you are a fan of Alfred Tennyson, the nineteenth century poet. Amazingly, it is accepted - even though he is a penniless man of ordinary family, and she is rich and high-born.There are fairly lengthy descriptions of the social life of ants which are gruesome and fascinating at the same time.

The one exception is a chapter where the narrator is Tennyson himself - while it is instructive to get his side of the story, and to learn of his feelings for Mrs. A neglected housewife makes an unexpected friend at a nursing home, where she hears a true tale about an independent woman in 1920s Alabama, who ran the town diner, served food to people of color and protected her sister-in-law from an abusive spouse. Eugenia's behaviour alternates between coldness, locking William out of her room, and intense sexual passion.By joining TV Guide, you agree to our Terms of Use and acknowledge the data practices in our Privacy Policy.

Bound in the publisher's original quarter navy blue cloth and blue boards with the front cover and spine stamped in gilt.Getting the reader to see the proper privileged society through the images and metaphors of insect life was marvelous. Beautiful scenery of the English countryside, a captivating young woman with a dark secret, an innocent young man captivated by the trappings of wealth and "proper" society all come together in this terrific film. The character of William Adamson does not provide sufficient backbone in “Morpho Eugenia” to make us want to keep reading, however clever the work is. Perhaps the place where the insect-human comparison is most forceful is in the story’s treatment of the aristocracy, who are depicted as either indolent, or selfish, or outright cruel. Weaving expansionist thinking of the 1800's with the burgeoning interest in Naturalism in that time period, to the inbreeding of the aristocracy and the conflict between the human ideal of "civilized" vs NATURE: red in tooth and claw; this story is both poetic and fierce all at once.
