About this deal

Frank Miller για να σκαρφιστεί μια τέτοια παρανοϊκή και ιδιαίτερα βίαιη ιστορία, όμως δύσκολα θα μπορούσε να γράψει κάτι πιο ακραίο και παράξενο. Couldn’t confirm Hard Boiled with Warner Bros, and there has been prior talk of adaptations, but I hear this is going to make. It reminds me of Scorsese talking about how he had to desaturate the colours at the end of Taxi Driver to avoid an X rating. UPDATE: Deadline hears that while all the deals have to be made on Hard Boiled, Warner Bros is looking for Ben Wheatley to develop the action film as a potential vehicle for The Avengers and The Night Manager star Tom Hiddleston.

Downer Ending: Nixon is ultimately defeated, rebuilt as Carl once more, and ends up right back where he started. Along with Ramones bumper stickers, cars named after Stallone, Eastwood and Norris, highway signs named after Goldie Hawn, giant Pepsi and 7up cans on cars, snickers, butterfingers, Baby Ruth, Milky way, Cheetos – total excess and abundance, the more absurd the better. The plot, such as it is, concerns Barbara, the robot at Willeford Home Appliances that I mentioned earlier as stuffing a dead guy down the toilet.

It’s like being a wrangler at a rodeo, you’re riding a bucking bronco and the best thing to do is hold on”.

Covers Always Lie: The hardback's cover shows the protagonist facing off against hordes of punks, suggesting a Death Wish-style plot; nothing to do with the actual story. This may have already been the end of what many fans might consider his prime, but he still had good work ahead of him, including original creations like Sin City (which remains entertaining and compelling, problematic as it may be) and more corporate work like Daredevil: The Man Without Fear (which, aided by excellent John Romita Jr. Carl Seltz, ο οποίος είναι ένας ερευνητής ασφαλειών από τα προάστια, πιστός σύζυγος και αφοσιωμένος πατέρας, τον Nixon, ο οποίος είναι ένας μανιακός και δολοφονικός φοροεισπράκτορας που δεν κουράζεται να σκοτώνει ανθρώπους στο αρρωστημένο αστικό σφαγείο του Λος Άντζελες, και, τέλος, τον Unit Four, ένα ρομπότ, που είναι η απόλυτη δολοφονική μηχανή για μια ιδιωτική εταιρεία -αλλά και η τελευταία ελπίδα για το μέλλον των σκλαβωμένων μηχανικών υπηρετών.Ronin I thought was a whole lot of nothing, other than DC throwing a lot of money at Miller to do a fan-fiction mash-up of Moebius and Lone Wolf and Cub, without ever coming up with anything unique within it. Throughout the whole book, 'Carl' is battling a robot, causing a tremendous amount of anarchy and destruction as he rampages through the city looking for ways to stop his current target and also later on find out what's truth and what's lie.

It’s usually through the hand-wringing of concerned parents – the creators often miss out on opportunities to make ironic comments about the violence they’re peddling (which is why The Last Action Hero, despite its many flaws, is an underrated movie). There's a fine line between a fast-paced story and a rushed one, and there was definitely enough in here to allow deeper digging without succumbing to boredom or redundancy. The people he was chasing, also robots, attempt to recruit him into their planned revolution against their human masters, but all Carl/Nixon wants is to go back home after a long, hard day at work. And because it's so short, there are a few questions which answers are rather implied than answered.

I am tempted to check out in 2023 another series by the same artist, even as I am aware that it is just as violent, if not even worse, than this one : Shaolin Cowboy , purely for the pleasure of poring over more of Darrow’s artwork. A trail of bloody agents leads to a full double page spread that has Nixon locked in and surrounded by the enemy along with the battles casualties on the ground. But it’s not funny in the “right” way – meaning the good guy makes a joke that lets us know it’s okay, because the dead people were evil. While it's choked with extreme imagery of almost every kind (surprisingly there isn't a single curse word throughout the entire book) in every panel, the story never stops moving full-throttle.This book may ostensibly have a plot, and Frank Miller may ostensibly have written the many onomatopoetic monosyllables induced by stab wounds and tractor trailer collisions, but the only reason to flip through these pages is to marvel at Geoff Darrow's unspeakably intricate and profane linework. Despite DKR’s flaws such as the outdated Dirty Harry worldview (cops are bound by red tape, politicians worry too much about criminal rights, the media are vultures, shrinks are gullible idiots) I reread it a couple of years ago and it still impresses me.
