About this deal

It gives the reader total immersion into the world, but makes it quite difficult to describe what happens. There was some uplifting takeaway from the book and I did enjoy all the prescriptions of books for each character I even wrote some down that I would like to try. I don't think it helped that I've had respiratory issues for the last six months and the descriptions of people fighting for breath were a little too familiar!

These vignettes truly capture the tone of 2020 with loneliness, fear and grief being juxtaposed with community, joy and love. As requests begin to pour in, what follows is a lovely and heartwarming story full of love, empathy, and the best of humanity.Everything Stephanie Butland wrote about about that period was so relatable, even though the story was set in York - thank you. Some people might find this difficult to read about particularly if they were separated from loved ones for a period of time or if they lost someone, whether to Covid or another illness, at this time. I would recommend this if you like issue-laden contemporary women’s fiction and don’t mind a large number of book recommendations. Fell in love with the characters and their stories that happened in a time that I turned to books as well.

I loved the quotes and the chapters where it feels that Stephanie Butland is talking to me personally about the power of books and reading. There is a great deal of talking about, loss in all its forms and I was very upset at times during the book. However, the story thread of Rosemary and George as well as Loveday, Kelly and Maddison is weaved through the book as the main story arc. The book touched my heart, but it was a difficult read as the pandemic and lockdowns seem so recent and perhaps it provoked some panicky memories of which I didn’t realise I had until I read this book. Along the journey there is kindness and thoughtfulness, there are situations that arise that overcome preconceptions and finding commonality along with plenty of honesty. This is the first book that I have read which has featured the recent COVID pandemic in the forefront of the plot. While I've read thousands and have a sizeable home library, few books have ever begged me to read them again.
