About this deal

And a big thank you to NetGalley and Black Oak Publishing for giving me the chance to read this ARC in exchange of my honest review.

During the early years of the Second World War, the possibility of invasion by Germany was seen as a very real threat. The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads played a hugely important role in these defences, and I discovered more about this during a recent talk and walk which covered the role of the village of Acle during the war. The eight-part series’ cast not only includes the former Doctor, but also Bafta-nominated actress Olivia Colman who previously starred in Peep Show and The Green Wing. As this is the first book in the series we learn all about the main characters early on and the scene setting can take a bit of time but it was all worth it as it made the story flow much better later on and visualising everything was easier when I knew what people looked like and the lay of the land. When Harry Falcon, a wealthy boatyard owner and highly decorated World War Two veteran, is found drowned in his bath, DI John Tanner and DC Jenny Evans start by questioning his two sons, each with a motive for wanting him dead. There is nowhere else to put them – if the men are not at the sub-base the resulting delay in turning out in an emergency might be fatal. As for the first point, I find the clash too cliché, because it is used in many crime books and is an expedient to humiliate one of the two (usually the non-protagonist) and to bring out the protagonist as the good character of the situation. My sincerest thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me the privilege of reviewing an ARC at no charge. Once hostilities ceased in 1945 and the hire fleets got going again, the fleet of Vestas was increased over the next few years to a total of twelve by the early 1950s.

I was intrigued to see how Blake handled a serious crime thriller, as it is a completely different beast from his Space Police series.Instead, the marshland here became home to Southgates Main Yard, craft for which were built by Herbert at Potter Heigham. Bloodlands' James Nesbitt "galled" never to have been considered for Line of Duty by Jed Mercurio, 15 February 2021". I love the show and I can’t believe that I will be playing the younger version of David Tennant in this TV show – it’s awesome. So was this an April Fool that was just filed away at a later date, or was this genuinely designed to encourage the purchase of a TV licence.

Both regular and territorial forces were involved in the defence of the region, along with the Home Guard, the latter playing an increasingly more important role in those home defences as the war progressed.

The photograph above is from 1903 and shows three of Donald’s friends at an unknown location on the Broads. The risk of flooding at St Olaves was also an issue where the whole detachment was housed in “ a perfectly satisfactory boat. Paired up with young detective DC Jenny Evans, his first case is that of a missing wife who never arrived home after working her shift running a local pub. Going back again - being told no ❌ - you don’t have experience of directing specific types of footage and shots.
