The only slight fault, that may cause some readers a little consternation, is that the identification key is divided up by genus and spread throughout the book. He has served on the council of the Botanical Society of the British Isles and as chairman of its Conservation Committee and he is president of the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

Following on from its successful launch in 2009, Collins Wild Flower Guide – the ultimate reference book for wild flower enthusiasts – now enters its second edition.

The effort and technical expertise given in this book is due to the valiant effort of many taxonomists, and my hat comes off! David's years of teaching botany shines through in this book with descriptions identifying features to look out for distinguishing them from others more quickly and easily. This has been my main botanical reference book for 8 years of working as an ecologist, carrying out a variety of botanical surveys.

Featuring all flowering plants, including trees, grasses and ferns, this brand-new field guide to the flowers of Britain and northern Europe is the most complete illustrated, single-volume guide ever published. For those looking to gain more experience it may come in useful alongside other floras: it can sometimes be helpful to have more than one reference to enable you to confirm a tentative ID by following a different key or description. This is an updated version of a book which was first published in 2009 as the 'Collins Flower Guide', which has been renamed presumably to make it clear that it is a guide to wild flowers rather than those grown in gardens! David Streeter is Reader in Ecology in the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sussex and a member of the Editorial Board of the prestigious Collins New Naturalist series. Leading botanical artists specially commissioned to ensure beautifully detailed illustrations feature the most widely common British wild flowers.

The illustrations are very detailed highlighting the salient points as are the grasses, sedges and rushes. Comparison pages show different leaf shapes and flower clusters to enable quick and easy navigation to the right section of the book to make your identification.Birds continue to arrive in the UK from more northerly regions to spend the next few months here in our warmer winters, before. Even at its huge depth and quite a weight I will consider carrying it into the field on appropriate 'flower based days'. Featuring all flowering plants, including trees and grasses, and ferns, this field guide to the wild flowers of Britain and northern Europe has been fully revised and updated to reflect the latest changes in taxonomy and nomenclature.
