About this deal

It's been five years since most of the Earth’s population was killed by a “plastic dust storm,” a disaster that threw microplastics from the oceans straight into human lungs. This book is def not for everyone and I gotta say (even though it sounds bad) Harry was not my favorite character. Maybe I’m bias, since I have a soft spot for this sort of thing, but I’m not sure if it’s possible for neurotypicals to really understand what Katie was going through and how her trauma made her react to certain scenarios. Jackson’s debut novel, Not Alone, finds a new refreshing environmental disaster to worry about: toxic plastic dust.

She is clearly suffering from post-traumatic stress, both from the storm and from the assault, and their isolation has only made things worse. That is not intended to make the narrator sound bad, because I actually thought the narrator was pretty good, but the combination of her voice and a whiny 5 year old boy made this an excruciatingly painful experience. We are—well, ask Bigfoot, as Brooks does in this delightful yarn, following on his bestseller World War Z (2006). And during the times that I wasn't reading it, my mind was still on Katie and Harry, hoping beyond hope that they were going to make it, that they were going to be okay. journey to a very distant location she knows nothing about to find her fiancee, ostensibly because she doesn't want her kid to be alone. Even in her memory, occasionally seen in flashbacks, he’s loving and perfect, a man who can do no wrong.

Not Alone is the story of the harrowing journey of a mother and son, fighting for survival and a future, in a world ravaged by environmental disaster. Though they were well aware of the climate crisis -- Katie working with an environmental group, Jack a nurse -- they were thrilled with the plans they’d made for a life together. Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. Few people are left, and most who are alive are sickly, their lungs ravaged by plastic dust that rains from the sky and infiltrates the water and soil. Charlotte Mendelson, author of The Exhibitionist With hauntingly beautiful descriptions of the natural world, this challenging novel is tough and memorable. One I keep thinking about long after I’ve finished reading, and one I’d for sure recommend to readers of Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic fiction. Katie’s determination to keep him safe was so strong that protecting Harry ultimately fuels so many of her own fearful actions.
