About this deal

Pot/potentiometers are the rotary knobs. If you use Deoxit D5 recommended with Faderlube F5 to replenish lubrication. Look forward for this being an all in one thread with people sharing tips instead of getting a little here and there. And as with all procedures there will be those who will recommend Faderlube or D100 (100% deoxit) only for the rotary pots to be safest. Multiple sprays also available for DeoxIT® Gold G-Series, DeoxIT® Shield S-Series and DeoxIT® Fader F-Series)

It was the first widely used refrigerant. Because of its high boiling point (compared to most refrigerants), it can be used in systems with a low operating pressure, making the mechanical design of such systems less demanding than that of higher-pressure refrigerants R-12 or R-22. Use DeoxIT when your musical equipment is experiencing loss, such as turning a potentiometer or a switch and creating an unpleasant noise, even a cable connector. DeoxIT can be used on an instrument or any other electronic hardware that relies on knobs and switches, which are prone to dust and oxidation from exposure to atmospheric changes. Likewise, if there are any intermittencies in your signal or if your power supplies are not lasting as long as they should, a spray or wipe of DeoxIT will goMOST OF THE TIME, you'll be fine just leaving the relays alone, so you may want to skip this if it intimidates you, but as long as you can get the case open easily, it is worth doing.

And nice to have a dedicated thread. I used to link to the original all the time. It was tough for newbs to find with all the random deoxit threads created.

Oxidation is the Enemy

I received a message recently from a fellow AKer, asking me to re-post this semi-ancient post that has been long buried in the archives. While reluctant to re-post anything already in the archives (and thus risk wasting AK's precious memory space), I decided that with just a bit of modification, maybe it can help some of the many newbies here who ask periodically (and repeatedly) about DeOxit and how to use it. I'd like to add pics to it, but that will take a lot of time, so for now, with just a few minor changes from the original, here is re-presented... Now look at the inside areas of the receiver. There will probably be a few more fuses scattered around the circuit boards inside. One by one (so you don't mix them up!), remove and clean the ends of the fuse itself, along with the little holders that it clamps into. Then replace the fuse, and move on to the next one. Repeat until you've cleaned up every fuse you can find. R-11 is assigned an ozone depletion potential of 1.0. U.S. production was ended in January 1, 1996.

Also use on connections for your cell phones, PDA's, MP3 Players, Cordless Phones and Mobile Radios. Paul McClay wrote a comment on project log The Short Scan, 2D images, Saving my Dying Source and other blitz misc. A DeOxit kit, with both spray can (with little red straw) and little bottle of red DeOxit, and the same for the yellowish DeOxit Gold (formerly called ProLube). So I prefer the 5 oz (142 gram) Deoxit D5 (which has more solvents and flushing action for cleaning) and/or Faderlube F5 (for more lube) for just about all my cleaning applications. Just my preference. Most of the time, if you have followed the above process, your receiver will function fine, and sound markedly better than it has in many years. If there are a lot of knobs with different sizes, you might even want to make a diagram on a sheet of paper, and tape each knob where it belongs, on the diagram. Retro computer enthusiasts and computer technicians either love or hate Deoxit D5. There’s no middle ground with it. But I think the hate comes from people misusing it. Used sparingly, Deoxit D5 seems like a miracle cure. Here’s how to use Deoxit D5, and when. Remove the screws that are holding on the top cover, and put them safely aside in a small paper cup or dish or something, as you remove them, so they won't be lost. Label that container ("top cover screws") and set it where you won't spill it or lose it. Lift off the cover and set it aside in a safe place where it is out of your way but you can find it again. May be used where fast evaporation and/or non-flammability is required, and no dripping is preferred. It is also safe on plastics. There will be one or more small holes in the outer metal case of each Pot. These may be drilled holes, or just openings created where the metal cases had little tabs bent inwards to hold them on. It doesn't matter; just find one or more small holes that give access to the inside of the pot.

R-11: Trichlorofluoromethane also called freon-11, CFC-11, or R-11, is a chlorofluorocarbon. It is a colorless, faint ethereal, and sweetish-odor liquid that boils around room temperature. (23.77 °C) Use : Solvent is slower to evaporate, providing flushing action to remove surfaces dirt, grease and other contaminants. Is ideal for connectors and components removed from equipment or those that are easily accessible. If you set your knobs and screws and such all aside carefully, and kept the screws for each section in separate, marked containers as I suggested before, this should be very easy. If you kept the screws for each section separate, then if at any stage one screw is left over (a "proverbial" problem!), at least you'll know which section it came from, which will considerably shorten the time and hassle it will take to find where it goes. Improves conductivity and reduces intermittent connections. Reduces arcing, RFI, wear and abrasion. Cleaner Audio – Clearer Video – Reliable Data.

What Deoxit D5 can help

Fast-acting deoxidizing solution that cleans, protects, lubricates and improves conductivity on all metal connectors Freon is a brand name, for refrigerants made by Dupont. They use it for all sorts of different refrigerants with different boiling points. Anyway, as time went on, I saw this “solution” being performed more and more until it seemed to spread across country, if not world wide.
