About this deal

Wine goblet, blue glass decorated with white and gold enamel, Iran, mid-19th century; in the Brooklyn Museum, New York. (more)

The coating works in two ways. First, it reflects up to 99% of solar radiation to stop buildings from absorbing heat. More intriguingly, it emits heat into the icy universe, where the temperature is generally around -270°C, or just a few degrees above absolute zero, in the form of longwave infrared radiation. The team is now focusing on both further testing and practical applications of their cooling glass. They are optimistic about its commercialization prospects and have created a startup company called CeraCool to scale up and commercialize it. Late in the 17th century Bohemia became an important glass-producing area, and it remained important until early in the 20th century. By the 17th century England was making glass in the Venetian tradition that was notable for its simplicity. The glassmaker George Ravenscroft discovered about 1675 that the addition of lead oxide to Venetian-type glass produced a solid, heavier glass. Lead crystal, as it was known, thereafter became a favourite type of glass for fine tableware.

The photochromic lenses provide automatic sun-sensitive light adjustments for greater comfort outdoors. And the clip-on sunglasses can be conveniently stored in your vehicle for those bright, sunny days when you need darker lenses. UV and glare protection

Round faces feature bigger foreheads and jawlines but with softer angles. Elongating styles slim and sharpen a round face. Oversized rectangular and square sunglasses provide depth to the round face. Aviators suit this face shape too. Heart face Dark color shades are best for sunny and bright days, whereas tinted hues such as yellow, rose, and amber are best for cloudy and gloomy days or for enhancing contrast.

Though glass lenses arguably provide the best optical quality, they are no longer the most popular choice for sunglasses. This is because they are much heavier than lenses made of other materials, and they can shatter easily. However, they are still available if you request them.

Metal-framed sunglasses and cufflinks are a trendy combo. Cufflinks enhance a simple shirt and show off ones style. In a phenomenon known as "radiative cooling," space effectively acts as a heat sink for the buildings; they take advantage of the new cooling glass design along with the so-called atmospheric transparency window -- a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that passes through the atmosphere without boosting its temperature -- to dump large amounts of heat into the infinite cold sky beyond. (The same phenomenon allows the earth to cool itself, particularly on clear nights, although with much less intense emissions than those from the new glass developed at UMD.) Mechanical engineering Professor Jelena Srebric and Professor Zongfu Yu from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are co-authors of this study. This 'cooling glass' is more than a new material – it's a key part of the solution to climate change,” he said. “By cutting down on air conditioning use, we're taking big steps toward using less energy and reducing our carbon footprint. It shows how new technology can help us build a cooler, greener world." Enhancements for lenses are usually added to improve the quality of the vision. For instance, mirrored lenses feature a highly reflective surface that not only reflects light but also shields your eyes from other elements. There are also scratch-resistant lenses made of plastic or polycarbonate that are more durable than the untreated lenses. Perfect for various activities, the special scratch-resistant coating makes these lenses ideal for regular use. You also get photochromic lenses that can automatically adjust to the light in surrounding environments to reduce glare and provide enhanced clarity. When it comes to anti-reflective lenses, they allow more light to be transmitted through the lens without the glare and also sharpen the quality of vision.Rectangle shades for men are stylish and reliable. They look great on oval, round, and heart faces. Although there’s no denying that you look great in your trendy pair of sunglasses but there’s another reason you wear them. Your shades might help you make a statement without saying a word, they also protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them from harmful ultraviolet rays that filter through on even the cloudiest of days. Even though the mighty Sun is millions of miles away from us, it still emits UV rays that play an important role in causing macular degeneration, cataracts and growths on the eye, including cancer. Hence, shield your eyes from harmful UV rays during outdoor activities like watersports, snowsports and driving in bright weather with a pair of good sunglasses like Ray Ban Sunglasses. Researchers at the University of Maryland (UMD) aiming to combat rising global temperatures have developed a new ‘cooling glass’ that can turn down the heat indoors without electricity by drawing on the cold depths of space.

Science. 2023;382(6671):684-691. doi: 10.1126/science.adi2224 The development of the cooling glass aligns with global efforts to cut energy consumption and fight climate change, said Hu, pointing to recent reports that this year's Fourth of July fell on what may have been the hottest day globally in 125,000 years. To reduce the melting point of silica, it is necessary to add a flux; this is the purpose of the sodium carbonate (soda ash), which makes available the fluxing agent sodium oxide. By adding about 25 percent of the sodium oxide to silica, the melting point is reduced from 1,723 to 850 °C (3,133 to 1,562 °F). But such glasses are easily soluble in water (their solutions are called water glass). The addition of lime ( calcium oxide, or CaO), supplied by the limestone, renders the glass insoluble again, but too much makes a glass prone to devitrification—i.e., the precipitation of crystalline phases in certain ranges of temperature. The optimum composition is about 75 percent silica, 10 percent lime, and 15 percent soda, but even this is too liable to devitrification during certain mechanical forming operations to be satisfactory.

While radiative cooling materials are not new, many other radiative cooling strategies require the use of polymers to work. This new “cooling glass” is an interesting alternative to these other materials, the researchers say, as its harder nature should make it more robust to long-term weathering. It is described in the journal Science. The team used finely ground glass particles as a binder, allowing them to avoid polymers and enhance the long-term outdoor durability of the glass. They chose the particle size to maximize the emission of infrared heat while simultaneously reflecting sunlight.
