About this deal

Since gold-colored jewelry was popular during the 1940s, manufacturers of Hobé designs used gold wash or gold-filled techniques to give some sterling pieces a yellow-gold finish. When gold-filled elements are present, the marks on these pieces read “sterling” and “1/20 14K.” An entire piece could be washed with gold, but the company achieved the look of mixed metals for some items by including gold leaves or florets, among other silver components. Shortly after the turn of the 20th century, Henry Flagler built his railroad along the east coast of Florida, passing through Hobe Sound. This gradually created many opportunities including jobs, the birth of tourism, and other related industries. The Hobe Sound Bible College is the only institution that provides post-secondary education within Hobe Sound. Private schools include the Hobe Sound Christian Academy. Publicly run schools include Hobe Sound Elementary and Seawind Elementary Schools. Residents of Hobe Sound attend Murray Middle School and South Fork High School.

Some Hobé jewelry from the 1950s and ‘60s can also be quite collectible. This includes sets modeled after Austro Hungarian designs as well as individual bracelets. Also watch for individual examples and sets containing sapphirine stones (usually, erroneously, called saphiret). However, the styles marketed by actual costume jewelry companies in the 1940s don’t usually contain lesser-value gemstones unless you’re looking at Hobé. Albeit occasionally, Hobé incorporated genuine amethysts, moonstones, and other natural materials like lapis into its varied styles, so it’s worth taking a second look at the pieces in your collection. More often, however, the company used unfoiled glass stones colored to emulate semi-precious gems to embellish its sterling adornments. These sterling items are broken down into two categories, with just a few exceptions. The more plentiful designs feature ribbons, bows, rosettes, and leaves, all hand-formed using sterling silver. However, vintage jewelry enthusiasts love even more the other pieces made with delicate wirework in the shape of hearts and crowns and holding a bevy of colored stones. These designs are so lovely that magazine ads denoting them as “Jewels of Legendary Splendor” don’t seem like much of an overstatement. Many of them look like antique jewelry designs worn decades before these were produced, and they’re certainly legendary to collectors who fervently seek them.Another significant historical association possessed by Hobe Sound is the brief stay there of former Defense Secretary James Forrestal in 1949 between his resignation from that post and his death. There are plans to extend the high-speed Brightline rail system and add a station in Stuart to the north. Currently, the West Palm Beach Brightline station is the closest stop to Hobe Sound. The historic West Palm Beach station is also served by Tri-Rail, and is the closest Amtrak stop to Hobe Sound. Police protection for Hobe Sound is provided by the Martin County Sheriff's Department. The Martin County Fire Rescue Department provides modern fire, rescue, as well as EMS Services. State-of-the-art inter-facility EMS services are also provided by the Martin Health System.

Hobe jewelry is almost always hallmarked, so identifying it at flea markets and antique shops can be easy. Prices in the secondary marketplace range from moderate to high. In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 16.8% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 33.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 51 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.6 males. Moving into the 1950s and beyond, the styles of Hobé jewelry changed to appeal to a broader range of modern consumers. The business no longer marketed a distinct look of jewelry but rather branched out to include styles made to complement fashions of the day using a wide variety of materials including beaded designs. A number of different manufacturers produced jewelry with Hobé branding during this era in the company’s history including DeLizza & Elster, makers of “Juliana” jewelry. In addition to stones, some Hobé antique-inspired designs have small portraits or carved cameos that make them look like someone could have worn them a century earlier than their 1940s production date. Then you have the highly collectible pieces of Hobé containing plastic figures with an Asian flair. Desirable Designs by Sylvia Hobé By the time William Hobé started designing and hand-making prototypes using sterling silver, the business bearing his family name had steadily grown during the 1920s and 1930s. By 1938, he had obtained patents for several of his silver designs, which set the stage for success during the upcoming decade. The bulk of the sterling pieces that collectors seek today were patented and produced throughout the 1940s. In fact, more than 150 different Hobé sterling patents are shown on JewelryPatents.com, a great resource for researching costume pieces.During the land boom of the 1920s elaborate plans were announced for Hobe Sound by the Olympia Improvement Corporation. Their goal was to create a town, in Greek style, where motion pictures could be produced. Street names bore such names as Zeus, Saturn, Mercury, Mars, Olympus, Venus, Pluto and Athena. For a brief time Hobe Sound was renamed " Picture City" and plans were presented for a movie picture production center. The boom collapsed after the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, and the original name was restored. Street names remained, however, as did the cement streetlights along Dixie Highway. Many jewelry fans don’t realize that the New York-based Hobé Cie Ltd. designed, patented, and marketed jewelry. However, for the adornments’ actual production based on William Hobé’s prototypes, other jewelry manufacturing businesses made them. These makers include factories in Providence, Rhode Island, where companies produced many of the best 1940s costume jewelry items. Embellishments and Stones Used in Hobé Sterling Jewelry US Board on Geographic Names". United States Geological Survey. October 25, 2007 . Retrieved January 31, 2008. Hobe jewelry is among the most collectible brands of costume jewelry. Hobe, (pronounced HO-BAY) was founded in 1887 as Hobe Cie, fine jewelry line in France, by goldsmith Jacques Hobe. The costume jewelry division was added 40 years later by his son, William Hobe. The company slogan was JEWELS OF LEGENDARY SPLENDOR. Also watch for Asian-themed sterling silver brooches from the 1940s. These often have full-bodied resin figures that can be dyed or plain off-white to simulate ivory. Examples with faces and figures that are dark brown in color are usually referenced as Bandora pieces.
