About this deal

Fonseca traces its origins to 1815. Fonseca Guimaraens was then founded in 1822 when Manuel Pedro Guimaraens acquired the majority share of the Fonseca & Monteiro company holdings. http://www.fonseca.pt/en/vineyards/ Fonseca Bin No 27 was created over a century ago for family consumption, and only released commercially in 1972. Manoel Pedro Guimaraens who founded Fonseca in 1822, created this special port reserved for his family and kept in Bin No.27 of their private cellar. Excellent with bitter chocolate with a high cocoa content or a plate of chocolate brownies or truffles. Like all youthful red ports, Bin 27 is a match for soft ripe cheeses. Wine & Spirits, December 2017 – 90 points “A finely blended Port, this has a bristle of tannins up front, melding their chocolate richness with dried fruit flavours, ending clean and sweet. The wine’s lasting spice places it with a savory pumpkin pie.”

Fonseca's respect for the vineyard and the unique environment of the Douro Valley expresses itself in the firm's leadership in the field of sustainable and organic viticulture. It was the first house to offer a Port made entirely from organically produced grapes.

Using wines from Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, areas in the center and east of the Douro valley, they created a full-bodied, smooth and densely fruity wine, within a style once known as "vintage character", but which today is often known as a reserve or "finest reserve" The idea of combining different vintages allowed them to create a wine that would be entirely consistent in style from one bottling to the next. Half a century earlier, the company had the custom of naming their Crusted Port wines, also made in a full-bodied, fruity style, using the numbers of the compartments where the wines were stored. These cellar-like compartments are called "Bin"; hence the wines were called Bin 740 or Bin 82 VG. Reviving this tradition, Alistair decided to name the new wine Bin 27. A differentiated presentation was created, painting the name prominently on the bottle with white paint and the Fonseca insignia in red. The bottle with the painted letters was later imitated by other Port wine brands, being replaced in the mid-1980s by an elegant paper label.

LBV was developed as an alternative to Vintage Port for more relaxed and informal occasions. Like Vintage, LBV is a very high quality Port from a single year. LBV Unfiltered is aged in large wooden vats and then drawn off into bottle with no fining or filtration after four to six years. The result is a naturally expressive wine which has sacrificed none of its depth and fullness of flavour. Late Bottled Vintage is bottled when ready to drink. A limited quantity of this outstanding blend was produced. The palate full bodied and round, with a smooth velvety texture balanced by firm mouth filling tannins First introduced in the 1950s and named after the warm wind which blows over the Mediterranean from North Africa, Siroco is a blend of classic white Port grape varieties grown on the cooler, higher vineyards of the Douro Valley. To achieve its crisp dry finish, the wine is allowed to ferment for longer than other styles of Port before it is fortified. Ageing in small oak vats gives Siroco its smoothness as well as its attractive ripe fruit flavours and delicate nuttiness. From the legendary 1840, Fonseca's first Vintage Port release, to the superb declared vintages of the last decade, the house has produced a succession of highly acclaimed wines even in the most adverse moments of history.White wines, generally crisp, mineral-driven blends of Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina and an assortment of other rare but local varieties, are produced in small quantities but worth noting.

As it approaches its bicentenary, Fonseca can take pride in its past and look forward to the future with confidence. Wine drinkers increasingly seek wines of authenticity and character with a genuine story to tell and made by creative winemakers who understand their terroir and respect the environment. Bin 27 shares the heritage and style of the great Fonseca Vintage Ports, as well as much of their depth and character. However it is bottled when ready to drink and can be served by the glass directly from the bottle. Blended for consistency of character and quintessentially Fonseca in style, this reserve blend provides reliable and affordable value.

Fonseca was founded in 1815 and is regarded as one of the most stylistically consistent of the classic Vintage Port Houses. Vintage Port runs like a continuous thread through Fonseca’s history, from the legendary Fonseca 1840 to the superb declared vintages of the present day, their consistency deriving not only from continuity of family involvement and the knowledge and skill passed down from one generation to the next, but also a close link with the vineyard. Anthony Dias Blue, Tasting Panel, USA, February 2018 – 91 points “A blend of select reserve Ports chosen for their full-bodied palates; dark ruby colour; smooth and dense with toasty notes and rich, ripe, and deep flavours.” A superb balance of ripe fruit, delicate acidity and elegant notes of wood aging. Full and fruity on the palate with a lingering finish. Launched in Britain nearly 50 years ago in 1972, Fonseca Bin 27 continues to be blended from selected reserve Ports chosen for their smooth, round, full bodied palate and their fine, intense fruit character. The wines are matured in large seasoned oak vats to give them smoothness and complexity while retaining their intense and vibrant fruit character. Blended for consistency and quintessentially Fonseca in style, Bin 27 is bottled when ready to drink. Perhaps more than any other port house, Fonseca has built a loyal community of port wine enthusiasts. These connoisseurs value its individuality and the inimitable character of its wines. These include connoisseurs, collectors, sommeliers and restaurateurs as well as those who simply enjoy drinking its wonderfully rich and complex ports.

However for many wine enthusiasts around the world Fonseca is best known as the producer of Bin No.27 . This fine reserve port, launched four decades ago, is one of the most popular and successful port blends. It displays the opulent fruity character which defines the Fonseca house style. This is enveloped in the rich succulent jammy flavours and velvety texture of the wines of Panascal and overlaid by the exotic heady scents of Santo António. Bin 27 is a rich, fruity wine made from a blend of reserve wines. It is sold all over the world, with particular popularity in the North American market. Fonseca has respect for the vineyard and the unique environment of the Douro Valley which expresses itself in the firm's leadership in the field of sustainable and organic viticulture. It was the first house to offer a port made entirely from organically produced grapes. Few port producers have maintained such consistency of quality and style from vintage to vintage. From the legendary 1840, Fonseca's first Vintage Port release, to the iconic 1868 and the extraordinary 1927, 1948, 1977 and 1994, all four of them 100-point wines, the house has produced a succession of highly acclaimed wines.

Fonseca Bin 27 is very well suited for the classic port and cheese combination. A good farmhouse cheddar would be perfect. It is also delicious with desserts made from dark chocolate or berry fruit. He settled in England, where his company remained based until 1927, when the headquarters of the firm returned to Portugal. Fonseca Bin 27 has plenty of peppery grip, good acidity and a very firm structure, all in all though it has a nice style, with good substance to it, plenty of dark, tobacco-laced fruits and an attractive roasted-herb edge
