When it comes to Imalent, you can easily see the similarities between all the Imalent MS flashlights. The coating looks the same, the knurling/machining and threads. The MS06 comes inside a very impressive retail box. Behind a shiny exterior slip, the box within has the same imagery, but then flips open to reveal the goods inside. The Imalent MS08 is at the time of review, the latest addition in their MS series. We’ve reviewed a couple of MS series already, including the Imalent MS03, MS06, and last but not leas, the brightest flashlight of the world: Imalent MS18. This was a fun one. My sphere has quite a bit of trouble with higher lumens, as it illuminates like crazy, and my lux meter gets saturated. I’ve put an ND filter over my sensor though, recalibrated, and then run three tests and averaged, and I get:

The hold and feel of this flashlight are very good. The light is tiny, it is smaller than expected. You can see this in the size comparison pictures later in this review. It is even shorter than a Convoy S2+, which is a standard 18650 style flashlight!

Some people have complained about Turbo only working 2-3 times in a row. Only used for a couple of seconds, before the indicator LED turns red. This is not the case with this copy. It can be set to Turbo multiple times without getting the LED indicator to turn red. The MS06 is powered by three 21700 button top cells. The cells are included, and are 4000mAh 14.4wh cells. An indicator light on the battery will turn from red to green when it’s all charged up. Simple. Belt HolsterThe MS06 comes in an attractive gift box and includes a lanyard, extra O-rings, instructions and imalent branded nylon holster. Beam Shots Screw the flashlight body as tightly as possible after installing the batteries, the flashlight will work normally. Do not use a battery that is unable to discharge 35A current or the flashlight indicator will be red or the flashlight will not work well. The brightness of this flashlight is not without warning. Not only do you have to be cautious not to look into the light when it’s on (ever, at any output level), but it can also become very hot. The unit’s head is still touchable, but you wouldn’t want to hold on to it very long. The Aerospace-grade aluminum alloy body of the unit becomes warm, which could be a benefit in cold climates. A built-in thermal control module will automatically adjust the brightness output according to the mode and temperature to keep the unit at a comfortable temperature to hand-hold. Imalent provides 3 high discharge batteries with the MS08. These are button top cells, and are labeled: Imalent MRB-217P40S, and if you look at the following pictures, you can see some text behind the wrappers, indicating these to be Samsung INR21700 40T. These are good, high-quality cells. There is only 1 thing that I don’t like so much about the text on the wrapper, saying these have protection boards, but our fellow reviewer Owen took the wrapper off, and only found a spacer, without any electronics. That’s a minus point for Imalent, not so much for the review. The emitter chosen is a very common one for Imalent – the Cree XHP70.2 in 6500K. This makes sure that the light can punch out a whole bunch of lumens, and is somewhat of a calling-card for Imalent. Not that there’s a problem with that, of course – it’s fun for consistency. I could not find any PWM on this light, this is due to the fact that it uses a high-efficiency constant power circuit that maintains constant brightness. An 8AWG cable was then run from the negative terminal of the cell to the negative terminal on the driver through the UT210E, ensuring no shorts. With the use of my Opple Lightmaster I was able to get the following measurements inside my styrofoam integrating sphere:

A single stainless steel button contrasts nicely in the dark and makes operating in the dark that much easier. A magnetic charging port on the bezel allows you to charge the three 21700 batteries(included) by simply snapping a proprietary USB cable to it.(also included.) The torch at the highest powers heats a lot, but this was to be expected given the minimum dimensions with the length of only 119mm. Excellent alluvial beam that allows a good vision even with low levels starting to illuminate adjacent to the feet.
