This was my first experience with Brooks’ top-tier stability technology so I went in with few expectations. The DNA Loft midsole was a comfortable and cushy ride from the first step. Running in the Glycerin 19 is like meandering through town with the top down on a beautiful summer day. It just brings a smile to your face. If you are looking for more of a Ferrari speeding down the German Autobahn, then the Glycerin 19 is not the shoe for you. Save these daily trainers for slow or recovery runs, and they will not let you down. You won’t experience “your softest run ever” in the Glycerin 19 like Brooks advertises. Compared to the other max-cushioned trainers, the Glycerin 19’s ride is a tad firmer but it is more stable because there is less lean bias. I wanted to run in them long after my review miles. Together with the Adrenaline, they would make an ideal running rotation. But what makes it good isn’t just the zones for different parts of the shoe. The mesh also feels soft and smooth, which makes it more comfortable around your foot.

Brooks as a brand that fosters loyalty from their runners more than most brands out there. Would this simplifying of their stability lineup help or hinder that loyalty? Longtime fans of the Glycerin won’t notice many differences between the new model and the outgoing one, and the max-cushioned experience remains the same. One new feature of the Glycerin this year, though, is the addition of a support version, too—the Glycerin 19 GTS. On my first run, the shoe didn’t feel special or ground-breaking but it did feel very natural and cushioned with a signature Glycerin ride. I liked that the upper is super flexible with lots of padding, it’s a plush shoe that provides a ton comfort. The forefoot and toe box are nice and stretchy and there’s ample room with the upper measuring 98.2mm wide at the forefoot, which lets your toes splay nicely. The latest versions of the Nimbus, Triumph, and Clifton are all softer shoes than the Glycerin 18. Now, with the release of the Invincible, it’s hard to imagine that any shoe could be softer.

The Glycerin 19—available in both GTS (go-to-support)—is no exception and embodies Brooks’s DNA perfectly. Those who tried the 19 had only good things to report! There’s nothing wrong with being a firm, max-cushioned shoe. Some runners prefer firmer shoes because they are more stable and more responsive but the problem is that the advertising for the Glycerin is misleading. This has been the case for my Brooks experiences. Once they are broken in they were a dream to run in. I can confidently say that the Glycerin 19 is an improvement over the 18. The softer midsole is a move in the right direction and the ride transitions are smoother. These changes also don’t come at an increase in weight which is a bonus. The one area where the Glycerin 19 beats all other max-cushioned trainers is its magnificent upper which is an engineering masterpiece.

Like most other Brooks running shoes, the Glycerin maintains a very accommodating fit that should work for most foot shapes. The midfoot feels snug, while the heel secures the fit; the forefoot is wide enough to let your foot splay, and the mesh has enough stretch to avoid feeling squished. The downside is that the rubber wears down faster than the norm. On my pair, on the outer lateral heel area, the rubber has already worn down 2-3mm so I expect to reach midsole foam by the time I hit 300 kilometres which is not ideal.
