However, I don’t think any of us could have expected that she would churn out such a dark and gutting social commentary for her adult debut, and she would do it so well. Hide hit me like a punch in the gut. I was absolutely floored by the sheer magnitude of the story and the pace at which it unfolded, coupled with a writing style that I feel, as a reader, I have had the privilege to watch grow into what it is now. Kiersten White possesses a stunning grasp of her craft, and has yet again delivered a novel I’ll remember for the rest of my life. innocent childhood game given a horror movie coating, sinisterizing the phrase "come out, come out, wherever you are..." With two contestants getting caught and out of the game each day, the tension increasingly mounts. I read the original version of Hide last year when it released, and while I enjoyed it, I remember thinking it had a lot of facets that didn't translate well to a written novel and would have worked better in a visual medium, like a film or mini-series—or, lo and behold, a graphic novel! Is it a perfect book? No. But it's an easy read with a unique concept, interesting characters, a creepy atmosphere, and social commentary sprinkled on top. I kept pausing my work to read a few more chapters because I needed to know how it ended!

I actually was expecting something different to this when I went into it, some more horror and less adventure. Not that there isn't horror and gore of course, and the monster too, but it wasn't what I expected. I don't read too many graphic novels, but I really enjoyed Hide the novel and wanted to see how it translated over. I was not disappointed, this was great! So much color, getting to see each character come to life and the game play out was a lot of fun. This one grabbed my attention from the beginning. I was fully invested in knowing what was going on. Readers learn what is happening and yet, it only added to my enjoyment. With the descriptions, I could easily visualize what was happening in the book. I can see this being made into a movie. White is a writer of young-adult fiction covering a variety of genres (fantasy, historical fiction, paranormal); she also wrote a middle-grade novel of funny fairy tales. This one was full of tension, without making me terrified. You know things are going to go wrong and the author keeps you in the dark until the end when the motivations are revealed. There are quite a few characters to keep up with and two characters named Ava! Why?!

And while you aren’t looking, it’s eating everyone around you.” I have to admit, seeing some of the scenes in here was intense! If you remember there was quite a bit of violence in this one! Seeing even the violent scenes was a little intense. Lol. And of course if you’ve read the book, you’ll remember what’s hunting them and seeing that was the stuff of nightmares! I own and have read most of Kiersten White's work. Though I do have a copy of Hide, I haven't read it yet, so I was hoping the graphic novel adaptation would get me hyped to bump it up a bit sooner on my list.I do definitely think the graphic novel version is the best way to read this book. The illustrations add so much more meaning to the story. Further, I promise this is it for complaints, the horror aspects were kept too obscure. I wanted more. I liked the build and tension initially. Modern twist on a legend in Greek mythology (not telling though). Throw in a bit of Hunger Games and ready, set, go! If you want to read something truly spooky with a terrifying storyline then look no further than Hide! Also, in the author's note she mentions something about this being a treatise about race/class/whatever. Nah, it doesn't even come close to going there. I really enjoyed this story. There were definitely a lot of twists that I wasn't expecting! And even the ones that I was expecting were so well done that it didn't feel predictable.

The actual horror component of this book, the dark purpose of the amusement park and the game of hide and seek, was really interesting. While it could be considered a fairly standard convention of the genre (I think? Again, I avoid horror like an abandoned amusement park), I found that the driving motivations of the story’s villains were well-explained (but not justified!), which made the story emotionally relevant for today’s political climate. This book touches on racism, homophobia, classism, and more, as well as exploring themes of trauma, PTSD, and finding community, and I feel like each of these topics was well-handled in a novel of this length.
