Following the family’s move to Cheshire, a county in the North West region of England, Mantel explored her family background, a journey that inspired her personal memoir “Giving Up the Ghost,” published in 2003. The publication of The Giant, O’Brien in 1998 and Beyond Black in 2005 saw her begin to break out of being “a literary novelist” – at least in terms of sales.

Mantel, who attracted criticism for her story on a previous prime minister, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher, said: “I have met him a number of times, in different settings. To date the Wolf Hall trilogy has sold more than five million copies worldwide and has been translated into 41 languages. When asked by the Financial Times earlier this month whether she believed in an afterlife, Mantel said she did, but that she could not imagine how it might work.

The whirling panoramic scene takes place beneath the open skies around Wolf Hall with the predatory Cromwell perched at its pivotal centre.
