Many of the phantoms here are of the lives she might have led – including the daughter she might have had if her life hadn’t been blighted by undiagnosed endometriosis. Along with the historical novel, life writing and semi-autobiographical fiction form a dominant strand of her work to date. And in 2010, shortly after winning the Booker prize for the first time, she was back in hospital for yet more operations, a period she chronicled in a diary for the London Review of Books. Mantel, who attracted criticism for her story on a previous prime minister, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher, said: “I have met him a number of times, in different settings. To date the Wolf Hall trilogy has sold more than five million copies worldwide and has been translated into 41 languages. When asked by the Financial Times earlier this month whether she believed in an afterlife, Mantel said she did, but that she could not imagine how it might work.

For all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Mantel’s fiction, her mischievous sallies into essay-writing should not be forgotten. She encapsulates the contradictions of Rebecca West (“It’s her vices, as much as her virtues, that make her letters so compelling”), and doesn’t mince her words on Elizabeth Jane Howard. Despite Mantel’s mastery of nuance and moral ambiguity, the sexual politics of a small, working-class home — her home — elude her. The whirling panoramic scene takes place beneath the open skies around Wolf Hall with the predatory Cromwell perched at its pivotal centre. She insisted to medical professionals, through the exhaustion and pharmaceutical fog, that her problem was really a physical one; she knew it was: this was not the real “her”. Mantel died on 22 September 2022, aged 70, at a hospital in Exeter from complications of a stroke that occurred three days earlier. But the sounds she makes then, the rustle of feathers and the creak, the sigh and riffle of pinion, the small cluck-cluck from her throat, these are sounds of recognition, intimate, daughterly, almost disapproving. to which the only proper response is a non-committal look, a gentle humouring of their obvious insanity.
